FireTray

FireTray is a Thunderbird1) tray minimizer extension for Linux.

Main features:

  • minimize Thunderbird to the tray
  • show number of unread messages
  • hide/show via mousewheel and/or click
  • custom icon possible

Installation

Simply use the default installation method. See http://code.google.com/p/firetray/downloads/ to get the .xpi. Do not use the Mozilla Add-on page because it does not get updated regularly!

If you are updating GNOME (e.g. when installing a new version of Ubuntu-Linux) your installed FireTray may be incompatible to it, preventing your Thunderbird to start at all (and therefore you can't install a new version). If this is the case, use the following way to solve your problem:

  1. Start Thunderbird in safe mode via terminal:
    thunderbird -safe-mode
  2. Uninstall Firetray.
  3. Start Thunderbird the normal way and install the newest version
1)
works also, as the name suggests, for Firefox
