FileZilla

FileZilla is a feature-rich, cross-platform Open Source FTP, SFTP1) and FTPS2) client.

FileZilla3) stores all handled login data/credentials as plain XML files 4) in the following directory:

  • ~/.filezilla/ (Unix-like systems)
  • %AppData%\FileZilla\5) (MS Windows)

This is expected behavior because it is your operating systems's responsibility too keep these files save. But keep it in mind if you are using a non-encrypted and/or multi-user systems.

Installation

Ubuntu

10.04 Lucid and above

Simply install the following package(s):

After installation, you can start the program by clicking “Applications→Internet→FileZilla”. Or open a terminal and start it via filezilla.

Windows

XP and above

Simply download the Windows installer and execute it with administrator privileges. Or use FileZilla portable, if you want to run FileZilla without installation.

%AppData% is a Windows environment variable, pointing to the current application data dir of your account. Try to access %AppData%\FileZilla\ directly via Windows Explorer and you'll see how it works.
