Audacity

Audacity is a cross-platform Open Source sound editor and recorder.

The Audacity Wiki provides lots of information including tutorials and usage guides.

Installation

Ubuntu

10.04 Lucid and above

Simply install the following package(s):

There are some additional packages, providing special functionality:

  • lame (multiverse) – needed to import and export MP3 files
  • libmp3lame0 (multiverse) – also needed to import and export MP3 files

After installation, you can start the program by clicking “Applications→Sound & Video→Audacity”. Or open a terminal and start it via audacity.

Windows

XP and above

Simply download the Windows installer and run it with administrator privileges. Or use Audacity portable, if you want to run Audacity without installation.
