Audacious Media Player

Audacious is a small, fast and lightweight media player (with focus on Audio) for Unix-like systems. It is able to use Winamp “Classic Skins” and import Winamp Equalizer settings. Audacious brings built-in support for many codecs (e.g. MP3, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, WMA, ALAC, FLAC).1)

The project is a fork of the XMMS based but discontinued Beep Media Player.

Installation

Ubuntu

9.10 Karmic and above

Simply install the following package(s):

After installation, you can start the program by clicking “Applications→Sound & Video→Audacious”. Or open a terminal and start it via audacious.

All configuration files, playlists and Equalizer settings are stored in ~/.config/audacious.

You can switch between a native GTK interface and the Winamp Classic Skin Interface since Audacious 2.3. In Audacious 2.4, the Player will start with the GTK interface by default. To switch between them:

  • If you are in the GTK interface: click on “View→Interface”.
  • If you are in the Winamp Classic Skin interface: right click on a empty place and use “View→Interface” in the context menu.

Tips and tricks

Last.fm Scrobbler Plugin

To scrobble your played tracks to Last.fm:

  1. Open the preferences (Ctrl+P)
  2. Go to “Plugins→General” and check “Scrobbler Plugin”.
  3. Set your Last.fm credentials (the Scrobbler URL is http://post.audioscrobbler.com):
    • For Audacious >= 2.4: Mark the Scrobbler Plugin and klick on the “Settings” button below the list.
    • For Audacious < 2.4: A Scrobbler Icon will appear on the left side. Click on it, and enter your Last.fm credentials.

If you are Using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid, there is no “Scrobbler Plugin” because it was was removed in Audacious 2.3 which will be installed by the 10.04 Lucid package. However, the Audacious 2.2 plugins are still working (only the icon is not shown). Get the files /usr/lib/audacious/General/scrobbler.so and /usr/lib/audacious/Transport/lastfm.so from an older Ubuntu installation and copy them into ~/.local/share/audacious/Plugins/ on 10.04 Lucid machine. Restart Audacious and open the preferences. If the Scrobbler Plugin is listed, everything is fine. If not, the files may not fit your architecture or something else. Try the ones offered here and/or here. If they are also not working, compile the modules on your machine. And remember to delete scrobbler.so + lastfm.so from ~/.local/share/audacious/Plugins/ if you are upgrading to Audacious 2.4 because Audacious 2.4 will ship the Scrobbler plugin again, so you don't have this problem on Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick.

Minimize Audacious to tray

To minimize Audacious to the tray:

  1. Open the preferences (Ctrl+P)
  2. Go to “Plugins→General” and check “Status Icon”.

The icon also provides useful mouse button shortcuts (simply move the cursor over the icon):

  • Left mouse button: show/hide player
  • Middle mouse button: pause/play
  • Right mouse button: context menu
  • Mouse wheel up/down: turn up/down sound volume

Install skins

To install additional native Audacious or Winamp 2.x "classic" skins, Drag & Drop the skin file onto the main Audacious window or move the file into ~/.local/share/audacious/Skins (Ubuntu). To change the used skin, open the preferences (Ctrl+P) and go to “Skinned Interface”.

Winamp equalizer presets

Winamp Equalizer presets are not shipped with Audacious, but Audacious is able to import them. Therefore you may export your favorite Winamp equalizer presets as *.eqf file and import them into Audacious:

  1. Click on the equalizer's “Preset” button → “Import→WinAMP Presets”. This will modify the current equalizer setting, but does not store anything.
  2. Click on the equalizer's “Preset” button → “Save→Preset” to store the equalizer setting as preset. You can load stored presets via “Load→Preset”.
